Very rarely does one witness an automotive concern accomplishing what Aston Martin is in the process of achieving. In 1992 the noted English firm made just 46 cars. Last year production hovered around 2,000.
As impressive as that may be, the boldest moves lie ahead. Within three years Aston Martin will have a distinctive three-car model range for the first time in its history. Those 5,000 cars a year will come from the first purpose-built factory Aston has ever occupied, with, of all things, a passionate, focused German engineer at the helm.
In September 2003 Automobile Quarterly traveled to Europe to witness a week in the life of a company in the midst of a monumental transformation. The result is a fascinating dichotomy: as Aston martin embodies its tradition and handcraftsmanship, staying true to its past, it must also prepare for its future.
That Aston finds itself in such a position is just the latest chapter in an incredible topsy-turvy journey, one that started 90-plus years ago in a garage in London’s Kensington district.
